Re:Nylon

Prada has always utilized nylon as a main material. The brand's '84 debut of Pocone nylon in its bag and accessory line garnered an international acclaim. Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has redesigned its iconic nylon bags into sustainable ReNylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs -- a belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag, and two backpacks made from recycled ECONYL fabric that's created from recycled plastics, fishing nets and textile fiber waste sourced globally.

The material that is recycled is the result of a partnership with Aquafil the Italian textile yarn maker that produces Econyl fabric made from recycled nylon waste. The fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger initiative to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags and a pair of ECONYL shoes and boots, and a line of apparel made from the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce the series of videos known as "What We Carry" that exposes the cutting-edge technology which is used to make its Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling facility in Arizona that transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

With the transition to re:Nylon Prada is achieving the biggest reduction in virgin nylon use yet, resulting in the saving of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. Moreover, the move will reduce the company's emissions by 57,000 tons. This is the latest sustainability initiative from the brand, which just went fur-free in its clothing and accessories, a move which was lauded by environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and will sit for decades in landfills or the oceans until it is broken into smaller particles which can harm wildlife. The fabric may also shed microplastics after washing. However, it uses 50 percent less energy to make compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag materials like cotton or wool.

The fabric is made from a combination of waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions that come from the production of virgin nylon. It is also much easier than other bag materials to handle, as it does not need to be dyed or weaved. This makes it a great option for bags that are frequently used, such as gym or yoga gear.

In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible material than conventional cotton or polyester. It is also able to take the most severe wear and tear, making it ideal for backpacks and outdoor equipment. It is light and easily shaped and stitched to the desired shape of a backpack. Nylon is a great material for outdoor gear because it is impervious to water and doesn't take on odors.

If you are looking for a bag that is sustainable be sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification is a test for chemical residues as well as environmental and social responsibility. Be sure to look for brands that have this certification since they are more likely to be more transparent and responsible with their products.

Patagonia offers, for instance backpacks in a variety and yoga equipment made of recycled nylon, called Econyl.  prada handbag tote  is created using a closed-loop method which requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also helps organizations who work to protect our planet.
